Editing Analysis
I chose a powerful scene from one of my favorite shows, Avatar The Last Airbender. The scene involves a fight between two people who can control water in all its forms. The old woman, Hama, is a master at "blood bending" as there is water in blood, she can control limbs.
The scene starts off some extreme closeups to demonstrate the evil in the old woman's face against the moon in the background that they draw power from. The younger girl, Katara is forced to kneel via the power of Hama's blood bending and there is eye matching because we see the Hama's face from Katara's point of view while she's being forced to kneel.
The scene then shows an extreme closeup of Katara crying and gaining energy from her emotions which contrasts Hama's closeup that showed her evil face. Katara's closeup was that of a heroine and Hama's was that of a villain. Katara deflects an attack from Hama and the camera replays the deflection to add a wow factor. After that, the camera slows down and shows a closeup of Hama's shocked face and also shows it in the reflection of the drops of water, adding dramatic effect. The transition from scene to scene is fluid and the viewer gets some great views of the battle. We get aerial views and also views from the ground.
In the end Katara reluctantly uses her own blood bending powers and as she does it, the camera comes in for a close look on Hama's shocked face, and Katara's tears flow down her face as she is forced to use the disgraceful power. We see her eyes close as if she doesn't want to even witness what she herself can do. The shots switch back and forth between extreme close ups of their faces.
After Hama is caught, there is another extreme close up of her face as she grins because Katara is now a blood bender, and the shot switches to Katara's crying face while Hama says her last words, using audio to transition to the next shot seamlessly. After that the scene ends with a closeup of Hama laughing menacingly to add an eerie effect.
The editing in this show is my favorite among animated series'. The music and editing add heavily to the emotion of the story.
